New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such medications must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
