Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to question particular calls made by the official, following the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
